Dust is one of the most important sources of atmospheric pollution. Although this phenomenon occurs naturally, human activities can play a significant role in increasing dust by intensifying erosion. Dust storms, which mainly occur in arid and semi-arid regions of the world, carry a large volume of suspended particles and are known as one of the important environmental challenges. This research was conducted with the aim of investigating the chemical properties of dust and its relationship with geological formations in the south of Damghan County. The present research is applied in terms of purpose and is of an analytical-descriptive type, and its method is a combination of descriptive, documentary, analytical, and field methods. After determining the sampling location, dust samples were collected randomly and at specific time intervals. After drying and grinding, these samples were used to examine their physical and chemical properties using inductively coupled spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, identification of metals and minerals, electron microscopy, and laser analysis. The results obtained show that different geological formations, as the main sources of dust pollution, play an important role in sediment production due to differences in formation facies. Therefore, it can be concluded that the geological formations of the region are key factors in erosion and dust production. Also, geochemical studies of elements and unusual concentrations of some chemical elements (Ca, Fe, Al, Na, As) in the region show that human sources such as coal mine pollution, active industries, chemical and non-chemical industrial wastewater (such as Damghan Industrial Park), and agricultural pesticides play an important role in increasing these pollutants.
