The entry of organic pollutants and harmful metal elements into the environment following the leakage of petroleum compounds during the extraction, transportation and refining of crude oil in oil-rich countries has always been a serious concern for experts. The decay and breakage of oil transmission pipes from oil-rich areas to refineries located in different parts of the country are among the possible processes of uncontrolled introduction of crude oil into the environment. The present study aimed to investigate the possibility of soil contamination in rice fields of the lands of the Helisad region, located in Chaharmahal-va-Bakhtiari Province, with lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) following the leakage of crude oil into the soil from oil transmission pipes. For this purpose, the concentration of the mentioned pollutants was measured in 32 soil samples taken from the surface layer (0-20 cm) of these lands. The results of the study indicated that the average concentration of TPHs in rice fields in the Helisad region was 7.35% of the soil weight, which undoubtedly caused those soils to be classified as contaminated with petroleum compounds. Furthermore, the average concentration of total Pb in the soil was 57.83 mg/kg, and it exceeded the soil contamination threshold (75.0 mg/kg) in 9 samples out of 32 points studied. Similarly, the average concentration of total CD in the soil was 4.68 mg/kg, and the soil contamination threshold (5 mg/kg) was exceeded in 16 samples out of 32 points studied. According to these results, it appears that if no serious solution is found to repair and renovate oil pipelines upstream of agricultural lands, an environmental disaster of contamination of all soils in the region with various organic pollutants and heavy metals is very likely in the near future.
